Goddess Yoga & Ayurveda Retreat – October 2012

Betsy Davis, Vinyasa Yoga Leader

Betsy tells us~

About her background:
“Growing up in a large family in a tiny town in the Midwest, I learned so much about community and union – a wonderful way to grow up! Still, I was filled with a yearning to get out and explore the richness of this world, so as soon as I was old enough, I traveled in Europe, Asia and South America.

I truly love the visual arts and I graduated with a BFA in painting, then moved to New York City and began a sets, backdrops, and mural painting business. In 2001 I traveled to Nepal where I studied an ancient form of painting called “Thangka” (or scroll) with an old Tibetan master, studying one-on-one with him as he instructed me to paint the Buddhist and Hindu gods and goddesses in life-like detail. I’ve always been fascinated by the gods and goddesses, and love to thread their stories into my yoga teachings.

I came to yoga at a crossroads in my life, to confirm my spirit and define who I wanted to be into my future. I did my yoga teacher training at Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in Manhattan in 2001, studying with Dana Flynn and Jasmine Tarkeshi. I continue to be inspired by them and have taught at the studio in New York now for over 10 years.

While my passion as a painter continues, I feel yoga is also a beautiful creative vehicle for true self-expression. I also grew up playing the piano, developing an intense love for the music, which permeates into my yoga teaching. I fill my classes with creative and playful movement, creating a bridge to deeper union with one’s self, an individual exploration along a path to peace, freedom and ultimately– complete joy!

In 2010, my partner –Chris Gatti– and I opened Bhakti Barn – our own studio! Here – through my love of art and joy of movement – we are blessed to offer a place for the local and greater community to come together to participate in inspiring, life-affirming practice.”

About the Goddess Yoga & Ayurveda Retreat, Betsy says:

I met Niika Quistgard when she presented some Ayurveda Workshops at Bhakti Barn and immediately felt she was a kindred spirit.

I love the culture of India, the healing science of Ayurveda–and I love to travel. When I learned about the place Niika established – Rasa Ayurveda Traditional Healing Centre in Kerala– I grew very excited, dreaming of sharing the yoga practice in this amazing setting! And when I heard about the chance to time our trip with the Navaratri & Vijayadashmi celebration, I knew we had to do it!

Navaratri is all about the goddess and the blessing of fertility and abundance. This is the perfect time for me to offer a vinyasa yoga class designed to inspire movement through the sacred shapes of the Devi. Each asana class will symbolically and experientially link us to 9 different goddesses – or aspects of ourselves– that can be awakened by this ancient practice of yoga.

I’m greatly looking forward to coming more deeply alive on this great Ayurveda & Yoga Journey to Kerala in Southern India, as we all dive deep into an exploration of our own spirits.”
